BEYOND WAR - OVERVIEW
In 1991 the concept of an advanced distributed network game based on
deep space capital ships and traditional roleplaying values was submitted
to development.
Voice communication, peer to peer network connections, high speed video at home, real time combat in 3 dimensional space with perception effects, background artificial intelligence with behavioral learning, and complex sensor signal warfare were key features brought to the table. It all seemed natural to the son of a military avionics engineer. What could go wrong? Ten years later, 2001, on the verge of funding 48 hours before the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and other American targets, the principle developer was subjected to unlawful termination of access to his children. Within days, the interest became clear to everyone in the world why a wargame dealing with weapons of mass destruction was relevant to a global audience and a generation at war. Today, Beyond War is prepared to offer the vision of War, as foreseen in 1991 by its creator, involving asymetrical threats, weapons of mass destruction on the scale of planets and stars with no possible defense other than pre-emptive action, and the social and psychological aspects of both civilian and military personnel in the shadow of that threat. |
SET THE STAGE
Beyond War brings a form of combat and technology to persistant online games
that has never been seen before. Economic and political camps, civilian development,
a foundation supporting positive rewards for peaceful co-existance and stable relations
without de-fanging the very real and everpresent threat of aggression and human needs.
Beyond War sets a stage upon which the questions of extremism, violence, and civil
conduct can be exercised and examined amid the carnage and cost of war.
Beyond War allows full unrestricted freedom of movement and player actions, combined with equal freedom of reprisal, freedom from level-based grinding stacked fights where the odds determine the outcome. Beyond merely exercising our ability to make war, Beyond War begs the question of whether we should endorse violence - and if faced with the ultimate threat of war, how best to proceed despite the danger- with dignity and courage, to meet the threat head on and to live on beyond its legacy.Ultimately, in the common bond of this dark future, Beyond War offers community with persistant gains - teamwork, social and witty reparte with those who are shooting at us, and above all the freedom to stop (or start) fighting when we decide it is time. |
